Potential — Golf

Player

Play the shot you have.

The hero shot from the trees makes the highlight reel. The punch-out to the fairway makes the scorecard. Knowing the difference between what is possible and what is probable — that is the read.

Coach View

See the shot they don't believe in yet.

The ZPD — Zone of Proximal Development — is the gap between what a player can do alone and what they can do with guidance. The coach lives in that gap.

The shot they'll make next month is already visible to you now. Your job is to make it credible to them before they've made it.

Challenge-skill balance:

  • Stretch too far = anxiety. The player tightens. The round unravels.
  • Stay too close = boredom. Growth stalls.
  • The ZPD is the zone — one step beyond where they are, with your scaffold in place.

The MKO (More Knowledgeable Other) isn't always the better golfer. It is whoever sees what the player cannot see right now. In a fourball, the roles flip constantly — you read the green for your partner, they read your tempo for you.
