Chapter 5 — Power

The middle archipelago of the back nine. Leadership, Mentorship, Forgiveness. Three islands about how you hold the club when it has weight — when your swing affects more than just your own ball.

These holes only appear once you have something other people depend on. The play card and course card both gain weight here. The course card starts to outweigh the play card.

Hole 13 — Leadership

Decision questionDid I serve the goal — or stroke ego?
Play testDid the work get easier for the team because I was on the course — or harder?
Course testDid people grow on my watch?
Agency typeEthical agency. Tested only when you have it.
Boat to reach itThe Tight Five — purpose, principles, platform, perspective, performance.
FoursomeThe team. Not the audience.
Truth depositedLeadership is the rare swing that makes the rest of the foursome better — without making them dependent.

Hole 14 — Mentorship

Decision questionDid I keep being taught — and keep teaching?
Play testTwo real relationships in motion: someone teaching you, someone you are teaching.
Course testDid the next round of players know more than I did at the same age?
Agency typeTransmission agency. Both directions, always.
Boat to reach itThe Teacher archetype practiced and the Coach archetype received.
FoursomeOne older, one younger. Both walking real holes — not abstractions.
Truth depositedThe fastest way to compound a craft is to teach it. The fastest way to ossify it is to stop being taught.

Hole 15 — Forgiveness

Decision questionWhat did I release — and what did I carry?
Play testInterior work. The stories you have stopped retelling because they had begun to write you.
Course testDid I cut the chain — or pass it on to the next foursome?
Agency typeEmotional agency. The least visible swing on the course.
Boat to reach itQuiet, slow, often built alone.
FoursomeSometimes the person you forgive is no longer on the course. The decision is yours alone.
Truth depositedResentment is rent paid for space the resented person no longer occupies. The course card runs cleaner when the rent stops.

Island Connections

IslandWhat it gives the nextWhat collapses when broken
LeadershipAuthority that does not need forcePower becomes coercion
MentorshipA live two-way loop that keeps the leader honestLeadership goes brittle without correction
ForgivenessThe lightness to lead without grievance driving the swingOld pain quietly steers new decisions

The three feed each other. Leaders without mentors become tyrants. Leaders without forgiveness become punishers. Mentors without their own teachers become preachers. The cycle is short — break one and the other two warp within a season.

Push vs Glide

Leadership hole rewards intention over force — the team reads the why before the what. Mentorship hole rewards rhythm — small regular contact compounds; sporadic intensity does not. Forgiveness hole rewards flow over force — the swing arrives when the swing is ready. Forced forgiveness reads on the course card as performance and produces nothing.

Course-Card Risk

This archipelago is where many high-play-card lives produce poor course-card scores. Capable leaders who never mentored. Effective operators who carried decades of grievance into every meeting. The play card kept reading well — the course card recorded a pile of people who learned not to ask for what they needed.

Context

  • Tight Five — The leadership instrument set.
  • Archetypes — Coach, Teacher, Realist — the modes the leadership and mentorship holes use.
  • Goodwill — What the forgiveness hole deposits.
  • Persuasion — How the leadership hole moves people without force.
  • Mission Loop — The session pattern that makes mentorship transfer real.
  • Archipelago Map — Back to the master view.

Questions

If you have power, who grew on your watch — and who shrank?

  • Who is teaching you right now? If no one, what does that tell you?
  • What grievance have you been calling motivation — and what would the round look like if you put it down?
  • Where is your authority earned — and where is it borrowed from a position you happen to hold?
