Agency

What makes a person, team, or agent able to choose and move reality?

Agency is the capacity to perceive options, choose deliberately, act effectively, and learn from consequences under real constraints.

Problem: Activity can increase while the power to choose and act stays fixed.

Question: Is the binding constraint in the actor's position or condition?

Decision: Diagnose both coordinates, then enter the matching route before action.

The Spine

Keep the Tight Five visible: Options -> Intention -> Capability -> Action -> Proof.

  1. Foundations - Options require ground, access, and real alternatives.
  2. Intentions - A valued direction screens those options.
  3. Capabilities - Skill, character, instruments, and resources make action possible.
  4. Navigation - A decision becomes coordinated movement under constraint; The Hero's Journey turns the familiar story map into one safe, agency-building practice.
  5. Credibility - Consequences become proof that can teach the next cycle.

Zoom Out

Do not reduce agency to motivation, capability, output, or credibility alone.

Position and condition reveal the binding constraint:

DiagnosticIncludesRoute when unclear
PositionAvailable options, relationships, resources, information, constraints, and proximity to the desired futureInner Space to picture the field; Navigation to steer it
ConditionEnergy, capability, conviction, attention, and readiness to actPurpose for meaning and conviction; Flow for state and attention

A strong condition in a weak position produces effort without leverage. A strong position in a weak condition leaves options unused. Ask which coordinate prevents the next deliberate move.

Agency increases when a cycle expands the ability to:

  1. perceive options and choose by intention;
  2. act with available capability;
  3. observe consequences; and
  4. change the next question or control.

Use the Virtuous Feedback Loop to execute and close that cycle. Output without a changed next perception is activity, not proof that agency compounded.

Context

  • depends-on Inner Space — interrupts inner-state blindness and pictures position and condition.
  • proved-by Virtuous Feedback Loop — carries a chosen quest through consequences, evidence, and evolution.
  • depends-on Purpose — supplies meaning, direction, conviction, drive, and flow.
  • instance-of Tight Five Loops — keeps agency within five recallable moves.

Questions

What is the smallest move that would increase the power to choose again?

  • Which option is real now rather than merely imaginable?
  • Which support would enable the next move without taking over the choice?
  • What consequence would prove that future choice increased?

Changes my mind: Position × Condition does not identify the constraint or change the next deliberate move.

Next question: Which option becomes real when the binding coordinate changes?
