Capabilities

Which capability should you invest in so a worthwhile beneficiary receives value?

A capability is the potential to understand and act effectively in context. Develop it to serve a worthwhile beneficiary, not to rank a person’s worth. See Purpose before capabilities compete.

Human talent is innate potential and a revisable hypothesis. Practice, environment, health, knowledge, tools, relationships, and opportunity affect what becomes possible. Evidence should revise the investment, never harden a temporary result into a fixed limit.

Start With One Investment

Choose one beneficiary and one valuable change. Record the smallest capability investment you can test without crossing a wellbeing guardrail:

Talent hypothesis:
Beneficiary and valuable change:
Capability target:
Bounded time and energy investment:
Wellbeing guardrail:
Unaided baseline:
Support and AI assistance:
Independent test:
Transfer context:
Beneficiary evidence:
Dated decision: reinvest | adapt | redirect | stop

Run the cycle with the Education Process. Use the model below to choose a capability when the constraint is unclear.

Model

Organise capability by the value sequence:

VALUES → BELIEF → CONTROL → CREATE OR TRANSFORM
→ DISTRIBUTE → APPRECIATE → LEARN

Values And Fit

Goodwill chooses what capability should serve.

  • character and integrity;
  • beneficiary orientation and consent;
  • flourishing and wellbeing;
  • talent discovery and fit; and
  • purpose under competing demands.

Human authority remains decisive here. AI may help surface options or consequences but does not own values, consent, or human worth.

Belief And Sensemaking

Understand the world well enough to choose and act.

AI can retrieve, compare, explain, and challenge. People must still understand or verify consequential claims and decide what confidence the evidence permits.

When an AI ambition is clear but the next capability is not, use From Awareness to Agency to diagnose the earliest weak transition and choose one bounded experiment.

Control And Self-Direction

Direct finite attention and effort.

AI can scaffold plans and reflection. Humans retain wellbeing guardrails, sensitive judgments, and stop decisions.

Create Or Transform

Turn an existing state into a more valuable one.

  • creativity;
  • craft and domain practice;
  • experimentation and building;
  • taste; and
  • judgment under uncertainty.

AI can generate, simulate, analyse, and execute. The learner must frame the work, understand or verify what matters, and prove independent capability when learning is claimed.

Distribute And Coordinate

Help value reach people and groups.

AI can assist drafting, translation, preparation, and coordination. People retain responsibility for relationship, disclosure, consent, commitments, and effects.

Appreciate

Recognise whether value arrived and what it meant to the beneficiary.

  • feedback and consent;
  • taste;
  • evaluation and error recognition;
  • perspective-taking; and
  • recognition of beneficiary experience.

Output is a candidate for value. Beneficiary experience, affected-group evidence, and protected constraints complete the judgment.

Learn And Reinvest

Use evidence to improve the next investment.

  • learning;
  • reflection and transfer;
  • resilience and adaptability;
  • evidence retention; and
  • revision through reinvest, adapt, redirect, or stop.

The proof is not repetition alone. Test independent action, a materially different context, beneficiary value, and whole-person sustainability.

AI Literacy

AI Literacy is the canonical capability for understanding, using, verifying, and governing AI assistance.

Prompting and Orchestration are narrower practices beneath it. Neither replaces domain knowledge, verification, independent judgment, transfer, or human authority.

For every capability, record:

  • what it enables;
  • what remains human-authorised;
  • where AI can assist;
  • what must still be understood or verified; and
  • how transfer and beneficiary value will be demonstrated.

Do not use unsupported AI-resistance scores. Capability envelopes change by model, task, context, population, and evaluation. State the evidence and strongest counterclaim for consequential future-capability claims.

T-Shaped

A T-shaped capability profile combines depth that creates value with breadth that helps distribute and coordinate it. Treat the shape as another revisable investment hypothesis, not a survival score or fixed identity.

Skill Reference

Human capability, AI skill, and business capability are related but distinct:

human capability
→ public doctrine
→ authorised AI assistance or operational skill
→ useful action
→ beneficiary evidence
→ learning return

Operational skills should point back to the public doctrine they implement. They must name the human edge, delegation boundary, output, proof signal, and receipt. Activity without a valuable outcome remains incomplete.

Failure Modes

  • Treating current performance as a fixed limit or measure of worth.
  • Claiming capability from assisted output without independent transfer.
  • Optimising output while reducing judgment, vitality, belonging, integrity, or beneficiary value.
  • Using a changing AI capability envelope as a universal forecast about people.

Changes my mind: mature evidence that the value-sequence map systematically reduces learner agency or flourishing should change this organisation.

Context

  • applies-to Education — use the capability map inside a bounded learning investment.
  • depends-on Principles — test the beliefs guiding capability choices.
  • pairs-with Platform — distinguish enabling infrastructure from human capability.
  • proved-by Performance — compare claimed capability with observed evidence.
  • Education Principles — protect goodwill, agency, and flourishing
  • Capability System — connect human, AI, and business capability
  • Human Flourishing Scorecard — protect whole-person sustainability
  • Investing — make bounded commitments under uncertainty

Questions

  • What beneficiary and valuable change should govern your next capability investment?
  • What would prove independent transfer rather than assisted output?
  • Which wellbeing guardrail would make stopping a responsible decision?

Next question: What is the smallest bounded capability investment you can test now?
