Dream Engineering
What is the smallest responsible experiment that could make this dream more credible or less attractive?
Problem: A compelling future can attract energy before anyone has separated the beneficiary, assumptions, and evidence.
Decision: Commit only to the next evidence-producing step, not to the whole imagined future.
This method produces a dream experiment card with a beneficiary, state change, assumptions, test, proof signal, review point, and stop condition.
Inputs
- A meaningful possibility or recurring friction.
- A named beneficiary in a specific situation.
- Observations already known and assumptions still unproved.
- Constraints on time, money, safety, consent, and reversibility.
Steps
- Describe the better state. Write what changes for the beneficiary without naming your preferred product. Output: a one-sentence beneficiary transition.
- Map the present. Separate observed facts, interpretations, and unknowns. Output: a short reality ledger with sources or observation dates.
- Name the value. State why the transition matters and what cost, delay, risk, or lost possibility exists now. Output: a bounded value claim.
- Expose assumptions. List the beliefs that must hold about the problem, behaviour, access, delivery, and value exchange. Output: an assumption list ranked by consequence and uncertainty.
- Choose the falsifier. Select the cheapest ethical test of the highest-risk assumption and declare its threshold before running it. Output: a test protocol with an observable pass, fail, and ambiguous result.
- Commit the review. Name an owner, resource limit, review point, and stop condition. Output: a dream experiment card ready to run.
- Update the dream. At review, keep, revise, park, or abandon the imagined route based on evidence. Output: a decision and the evidence that changed it.
Checks
- The beneficiary can recognise the described situation and desired change.
- Facts and assumptions are visibly distinct.
- The threshold is specific to the context and was declared before the test.
- The experiment can disconfirm the preferred route.
- Consent, downside, cost, and reversibility are explicit.
Failure Modes
- Solution worship — the product survives even when the beneficiary problem does not.
- Manifestation without evidence — confidence grows through repetition rather than observation.
- Unfalsifiable test — every result can be narrated as progress.
- Runaway scope — the experiment quietly becomes a launch plan.
Proof Of Done
An unfamiliar operator can run the experiment card, observe the declared signal, and make the scheduled keep, revise, park, or abandon decision without consulting the original author.
Action Ladder
- Do it now — complete one dream experiment card using the steps above.
Changes my mind: Repeated use shows that the card increases attachment to a solution, hides beneficiary harm, or fails to change decisions.
Retrieval
Retrieve this method when a future feels worth pursuing but has not yet earned a build plan.
Version delta: Generate-to-manifest teaching is now an evidence-bounded method with explicit outputs, checks, and a falsifier.
Context
- depends-on Reality — separate the observed present from the imagined future before choosing a test.
- pairs-with Business Idea Evaluation — carry a tested dream into an explicit venture disposition.
- applies-to Business Experiments — use this method when the experiment begins from a desired future.
- depends-on Purpose — keep the imagined future accountable to a named beneficiary and value.
Questions
Next question: Which assumption could fail while every other part of the dream still sounds compelling?
- What evidence belongs to the present rather than the imagined state?
- What downside must remain protected even if the experiment succeeds?
