Opportunity Atlas
Which venture wedge still deserves attention after demand gates, contradictions, and a reversible test are made explicit?
An opportunity atlas is a decision map for venture builders. It connects a changing market force to a named buyer's lived Reality, a meaningful Dream, the smallest credible Bridge, and the evidence that could disprove the opportunity.
It is not a trend list, market-size catalogue, startup directory, or promise that every interesting force deserves a product.
Use It When
Start with the Opportunity Scanner when you still need candidates. Use the atlas when candidates have sources, observed behaviour, explicit unknowns, and comparable demand gates.
The method follows one sequence:
hypothesized Dream
→ diagnosed buyer Reality
→ backcast decisions and blockers
→ independent evidence lenses
→ contradiction reconciliation
→ evidence-bounded story
→ build-and-sell knowledge trail
→ no more than three wedges
→ cheapest reversible test
→ human decision
Diagnosis comes before prescription. The buyer remains the hero. A compelling story may expose weak evidence; it may never replace it.
Demand Gates
A wedge enters the ranked portfolio only when every answer is visible:
- Who is the named buyer, and what is the struggling moment?
- What makes the demand urgent, lived, and deep?
- What workaround, repeated effort, delay, risk, or spending is observable?
- Which two independent credible sources support the material demand claim?
- How can this buyer be reached across the intended market?
- What reversible action can test the decisive uncertainty?
Missing evidence means PARK or KILL, not a neutral score. Rank no more than
three eligible wedges. Compare demand strength, leverage, reachable
distribution, proof speed, compounding evidence, buyer recognition, and risk.
Entry Fields
Use one entry per evidence-qualified wedge.
Market Force
Record the sourced change, source date, and observed, inferred, or
hypothesized maturity.
Buyer Reality
Name the buyer, struggling moment, workaround or spend, and costly consequence.
Dream And Bridge
State a better future the buyer can recognize without calling it demand, then name the least commitment that could move Reality toward that Dream.
Commercial Route
Record who pays, for what outcome, and the reachable distribution path.
Knowledge Trail
Map buyer, industry, economics, operations, trust, technology, sales, and proof.
Evidence And Unknowns
Retain supporting and contrary sources, dates, independence, limitations, and the uncertainty that could reverse the decision.
Experiment
Name the cheapest reversible test, frozen gauge, authority, and kill signal.
Every material contradiction receives one disposition before ranking:
confirmed, corrected, demoted, or open.
Blank Atlas
For each wedge, fill in buyer Reality, demand evidence, Dream, Bridge,
distribution, decisive unknown, reversible test, and TEST, PARK, or
KILL status.
Smallest Viable Experiment
Freeze the hypothesis and falsifier before choosing a method. Prefer a manual, narrow, time-boxed observation or buyer conversation over a product build. Name the steward, participant stop authority, protected constraints, baseline, threshold, maturity date, evidence source, retention route, and kill signal.
If the “experiment” requires a platform, launch, irreversible commitment, or unapproved outreach, shrink it. A test proposes learning; it does not silently authorize spending, contact, execution, or publication.
Evidence-Bounded Story
Apply Inside-Out Storyselling rather than inventing a second story method:
- Reality: the evidenced buyer problem and costly consequence.
- Dream: the meaningful future, clearly separated from demand proof.
- Bridge: the smallest credible next move.
- Boundary: proof, estimate, assumption, objection, next ask, and forbidden claim.
Keep private capability judgments, customer details, rejected ideas, commercial estimates, and experiment receipts outside the public atlas. Only a named human may approve an evidence-bounded entry for publication.
Checks
- Every original source identity survives clustering.
- Shallow triage covers the full corpus; deep research covers only survivors.
- Buyer, economics, practitioner, trust, and capability lenses stay independent.
- Contradictions are reconciled before ranking.
- No more than three wedges survive, and each passed every demand gate.
- The experiment can fail cleanly without a product build.
- Public claims show dates, sources, maturity, limitations, and authority.
Changes my mind: Repeated use shows that the atlas advances attractive stories without improving demand discrimination or reducing irreversible commitments.
Context
- depends-on Opportunity Scanner — produce observable, evidence-tagged candidates before portfolio ranking.
- applies-to Trend Spotting — convert changing forces into buyer questions rather than trend theatre.
- uses Inside-Out Storyselling — make a supported wedge recognizable without stretching proof.
- pairs-with Business Idea Evaluation — decide whether a tested wedge should advance, test, park, or die.
- pairs-with Reality — keep portfolio claims tied to observed conditions and falsifiers.
Questions
Next question: Which leading wedge disappears when you require a named buyer, observable workaround or spend, two independent sources, and a reversible test?
- Which contradiction would most change the ranking if resolved?
- What is the cheapest observation that could kill the leading wedge?
