Idea Capture

What can you preserve now without confusing observation, interpretation, and proposed solution?

Problem: Ideas are often polished faster than the lived friction that gave rise to them can be examined.

Decision: Capture the beneficiary and friction first; defer evaluation until the record is honest enough to test.

This method produces one idea-capture card that can enter Business Idea Evaluation.

Inputs

• A friction, workaround, request, surprising behaviour, or possible improvement.
• The source and date of the observation.
• Permission to record any sensitive information included in the source.

Steps

1. Name the moment. Record where and when the friction occurred. Output: a concrete situation, not a market category.
2. Name the beneficiary. Identify the person or role affected and the outcome they were trying to reach. Output: a named beneficiary and job.
3. Record the observation. Write what happened without causal interpretation. Output: one or more fact-tagged notes.
4. Record the workaround. Note what the beneficiary does today and the time, money, risk, delay, or effort it consumes. Output: a current-behaviour note.
5. Propose a response. Describe the smallest change mechanism in plain language. Output: a hypothesis, clearly tagged as an assumption.
6. Name missing proof. State the uncertainty that most threatens the idea and the cheapest observation that could reduce it. Output: a first-test candidate.

Checks

• A stranger can distinguish every observed fact from every assumption.
• The beneficiary is narrower than “businesses”, “consumers”, or “everyone”.
• The current workaround is behaviour, not an opinion about willingness to buy.
• The proposed response can be removed while the problem record still makes sense.
• No arbitrary duration, sample count, or score is treated as universal proof.

Failure Modes

• Solution-first capture — features replace the struggling moment.
• Borrowed pain — a trend or second-hand claim is recorded as direct observation.
• Compliment inflation — encouragement is treated as behavioural evidence.
• Premature scoring — a number hides missing evidence rather than exposing it.

Proof Of Done

One idea-capture card exists, its sources are traceable, facts and assumptions are separable, and its largest missing proof can become a bounded test.
