Business Strategy
Which valuable bet deserves the business's scarce capacity?
Strategy is a coherent bet about beneficiary, position, advantage, resources, and accepted loss. It turns Purpose into choices and becomes real only when Navigation can execute it and evidence can change it.
The Spine
- Set the bearing — name the beneficiary, valuable future, and protected constraints.
- Name the valuable gap — compare that future with present reality.
- Find the strategic crux — identify the assumption that controls the bet.
- Commit the choice — name authority, allocation, accepted loss, and review.
- Make the bet executable — connect judgment to work, proof, outcome, and precedent.
- Choose the value model — decide how the valuable change can be created and sustained.
Zoom Out
Navigation carries the bet through bounded action. Performance returns evidence. Strategy evolves when that evidence changes the problem, advantage thesis, allocation, or stop decision.
Changes my mind: the strategy cannot state what it will stop doing, what must be true, or which evidence would change the bet.
Context
- depends-on Purpose — define the beneficiary, valued future, and constraints before allocating resources.
- depends-on Problems — identify the consequential gap the bet must close.
- applies-to Navigation — turn strategic choice into a bounded, observable course.
- applies-to Strategic Decision Graph — retain why the bet was chosen and whether precedent should govern the next one.
- proved-by Performance — judge the bet by beneficiary evidence rather than activity.
- depends-on Questioning System — expose the uncertainty that could invalidate the strategic crux.
- applies-to Customer Sales — test positioning through observable customer choices.
- applies-to Customer Pricing — test whether the value hypothesis supports an exchange.
- applies-to Business — connect the bet to the capabilities that must sustain it.
Questions
Next question: which assumption or trade-off prevents commitment now?
- What will the business stop doing?
- What evidence will trigger reinforcement, correction, or retreat?
