Voting
Life is a series of decisions about what matters, then about the best way to move. Voting is one of the harder ones, because the dream is large and the proof arrives late.
This protocol does not name a party. It does not tell you how to vote. It gives you questions. What you can see is limited by what you know to ask. After you run it, you must still be able to vote no.
Use it when a promised future sounds appealing and you need to know whether the people offering it can lead the way.
Two questions
Answer both. One is not enough.
- Dream. Does the proposed path describe a better country you would still want if you were free to refuse it?
- Credibility. Have these people already moved real know-how toward that country, or only the language?
An appealing dream with no know-how is seduction. A capable operator chasing a country you would not inhabit is the wrong game, played well.
What a country can actually become
A country is good at what its people already know how to do. That know-how sits in heads, tools, and practised work. It does not travel in a slogan.
Think of the skills a country already has as letters. A product, an industry, or a "better country" is a word made from those letters. A nearby word needs one new letter. A distant word needs a new vocabulary. Nearby moves are how countries grow. Leaps across empty space fail unless someone names how the missing skill will be learned, and by whom.
Mastery is slow. A recipe, a website, or a speech does not install it. People carry it. A party that cannot say whose skill must move, or which nearby capability must be practised, is selling a picture.
This test follows the public work of Ricardo Hausmann on economic complexity and the adjacent possible: what a place can become next depends on the know-how it already holds. See the Atlas of Economic Complexity and his talk on what a country is good at. The atlas is a map, not a voting instruction.
Run
Write the answers down. Short is better. Stop at the first step you cannot answer.
- Name the dream. One sentence: what better country, for whom, by when. If you need their adjectives to say it, you do not see it yet.
- Test the appeal. Would you still want that future if nobody was watching and you could walk away? Hope is allowed. Hope is not a vote.
- List the letters. What know-how does the path require? Mark each as already here, one step away, or absent. An absent letter is years of practice or a decision to bring in people who have it. It is not a speech.
- Name the jump. Is the path inside what the country already does well, or a leap? Reject a leap that has no named way to acquire the missing letter.
- Test credibility. What have these people already moved: a skill, a firm, a supply line, a standard, a law that changed a real practice? A new frame for the same old extraction is not leadership. Say who pays them, and what they gain if you believe them.
- Name authority and the way out. Who can actually do this? What must they not trade away? Who can stop them? What can you do if the path fails? A dream with no stop is a trap.
Rhetoric check
Good reasoning leaves the choice with you. Run these five. If one fails, do not paper over it with a stronger feeling.
| Check | Ask |
|---|---|
| Ethos | Have they earned trust for this claim, and are their motives visible? |
| Logos | What exactly is promised, what must be true, and what would show it is false? |
| Pathos | What do you hope, fear, or stand to lose — named, not used against you? |
| Kairos | Is this the real moment to choose, with time to refuse, or manufactured urgency? |
| Topos | Can you see the other paths, including doing less, or is the frame hiding them? |
Stop
- You cannot say the dream in your own words.
- You cannot name the know-how, or the jump is a leap with no teacher.
- Credibility is a mood, a poll, or a fear of the other side.
- You cannot describe a genuine no.
Then do not vote yet. Learn one missing fact. The protocol failed open. That is success.
Close
Write four lines:
- Dream, in your words.
- Jump: near, or far.
- Credibility: the concrete thing they have already moved, or "none found".
- Choice: who, or no, and what single fact would change your mind.
This method is a candidate. It has not been shown to make votes wiser. Using it does not make your choice correct. It makes the choice yours.
