Dream Specification
The Dream Specification v1 turns a preferred-future story into an agreement that can guide action without stealing authorship from the dreamer or moving success after results appear. It works unchanged for a dream home, an organisational change, or a business workflow because it specifies value and evidence rather than a particular product.

Operating rules
- The dreamer or customer owns the preferred future. A facilitator may clarify it but may not manufacture it to fit an available offer.
- Separate observation, inference, prediction, and unknown. Name who has authority to judge every consequential claim.
- Freeze the preferred-future setpoint, Gauge, and review window before action. New information may be captured during execution, but it cannot silently rewrite success.
- Compose the smallest useful bridge from current capability. Missing capability is a finding, not permission to invent certainty.
- End with a beneficiary or independent receipt and a changed decision. Completion alone is not value evidence.
- Version the specification whenever an authorised review changes intent, standards, or measurement.
Exceeds expectations means additional beneficiary-accepted value that preserves the declared values and constraints. It does not mean extra output, uncontrolled scope, or retrospectively lowering the standard.
Worked example: a dream home
The preferred-future story is not “build a four-bedroom house.” It might be “our extended family can gather without anyone losing quiet, privacy, or connection to the garden.” The setpoint and standards then name accessible shared space, private retreat, budget, ecological constraints, and the experience the family will judge. Present land, finance, trades, relationships, and consent shape the smallest useful experiment. A family walkthrough and lived-use review provide the outside-in return.
The field contract is identical for a business workflow. Replace the site and household capability with the observed workflow, adoption owners, tools, and skills; replace the family walkthrough with the beneficiary's operating evidence. The method does not need a new schema.
Before action checklist
- The dreamer and beneficiary are named, and authorship is explicit.
- Observations are separated from inferences and predictions.
- Values, constraints, and acceptable trade-offs are visible.
- Setpoint, Gauge, evidence source, review window, and kill signal are frozen.
- The bridge begins from present capability and names missing capability honestly.
- Receipt authority and the decision the evidence will inform are agreed.
Failure modes
- Offer-shaped dream: the facilitator rewrites intent around what they can sell.
- Moving Gauge: success is redefined after execution begins.
- Output surplus: more features, hours, or artifacts are called “exceeding expectations.”
- Capability fantasy: a bridge assumes tools, skills, relationships, or adoption that do not exist.
- Receipt-free close: completion or payment is treated as beneficiary acceptance.
Changes my mind: the frozen Gauge, review window, or receipt authority proves unusable across materially different personal and organisational cases without changing the field contract.
Context
- implements Dreamineering — converts the four perspectives into one portable method.
- starts-from Reality — distinguishes what is observed from what is believed.
- governed-by Standards — freezes the measurement agreement before execution.
- returns-to Evolution — retains only authorised, evidence-backed learning.
Questions
Next question: Which field is currently being assumed rather than agreed?
- What evidence would make the dreamer change the story?
- Who may judge whether beneficiary value occurred?
- Which value or constraint must survive even when the result exceeds the setpoint?
