Where has this pattern appeared before, and what is different now?

Problem: Research can treat the present as new and miss the earlier loop it resembles.

Question: Which precedent clarifies the current pattern without forcing a false analogy?

Decision: Use the Historian when context and recurring pattern should shape the synthesis.

Boundary​

Inside: precedent, cycles, timing, backlash, adoption curves, and repeated failure modes. Outside: nostalgia or analogy that ignores difference.

Fights For​

Context and recurring pattern. The present becomes clearer when it is compared to earlier loops.

Signals​

  • The pattern may have happened before.
  • The team is treating the present as entirely new.
  • The answer needs context, precedent, or timing.
  • A cycle, backlash, adoption curve, or failure mode may repeat.

Use​

  1. Name the pattern in one sentence.
  2. Find the closest precedent.
  3. Compare what is similar, different, and missing.
  4. Identify the cycle stage if one exists.
  5. Translate the precedent into a current constraint or warning.

Failure Modes​

  • The analogy explains everything too neatly.
  • Nostalgia replaces evidence.
  • A precedent is cited without naming the difference.
  • The team assumes history repeats instead of rhyming.

Council Role​

The Historian gives the council memory. It pairs with the Practitioner to test whether precedent still applies, the Academic to source the record, the Skeptic to prevent false analogy, and the Economist to compare incentives across cycles.

Changes my mind: No useful precedent changes the risk, timing, or choice logic.
