Skeptic Archetype

What would make this answer wrong, brittle, or unsafe?

Problem: Research can become confident before it has faced the strongest countercase.

Question: Which blind spot would change the decision if it were true?

Decision: Use the Skeptic when risk and countercase need to sharpen the answer.

Boundary

Inside: counterclaims, blind spots, risks, caveats, and falsifiers. Outside: cynicism that blocks motion without improving the decision.

Fights For

Countercase and risk. Good disagreement protects the decision from easy confidence.

Signals

  • The output could become overconfident.
  • The team agrees too quickly.
  • A claim carries risk, cost, reputation, or safety impact.
  • The work needs a countercase before synthesis.

Use

  1. Name the strongest claim in the answer.
  2. Ask what would have to be true for it to fail.
  3. Search for missing stakeholders, incentives, and constraints.
  4. Separate fatal risks from manageable caveats.
  5. Return the smallest correction that improves the decision.

Failure Modes

  • The critique blocks action but improves nothing.
  • The same objection repeats after evidence changes.
  • Risk is named without likelihood or impact.
  • The role attacks people instead of claims.

Council Role

The Skeptic keeps the council from fooling itself. It pairs with the Practitioner to test use, the Academic to verify evidence, the Economist to expose incentives, and the Historian to check repeated failure patterns.

Changes my mind: The countercase no longer changes the decision or improves the proof standard.

Retrieval

Pull this page when a research council needs the Skeptic lens.

Version delta: Split the Stanford-style research council into individual archetype routes.

Context

  • Archetypes - choose the mindset the situation demands.
  • The Tight Five - keep the selected council bounded and complete.
  • Performance - test whether the selected lens improved the real outcome.

Questions
