Capture is cheap by default.
Every system built to carry a signal creates a choke point worth capturing. Good actors ignore it — they are doing the work. Bad actors invest in it. The corridor selects for corridor-seekers over time. This is not cynicism. It is structure.
Capture is cheap by default. Good design makes seeking the corridor cost more than doing the work.
Ethos
The corridor creates itself.
A church needs priests because it needs consistency. A standards body needs members because it needs coverage. A market needs a clearinghouse because it needs trust. Each creates a choke point — a position where control over the flow is worth more than doing the work the flow is for.
Good actors don't seek the choke point. They are busy doing the work. Bad actors calculate: is controlling the flow more valuable than contributing to it? When the answer is yes, they invest. When they succeed, the institution has a new class of member whose purpose is the corridor, not the signal.
This is not evil. It is rational. The corridor is cheap to seek when the cost of seeking it is low and the value of holding it is high. The problem is not the people. It is the math.
The moment a system makes one position worth more than doing the underlying work, it has created a capture surface. The surface does not need to be large. It only needs to be cheaper to seize than to ignore.
Logos
The sequence runs everywhere.
Church, guild, union, platform, standards body, DAO. The substrate is different each time. The sequence is the same. Five steps from signal-gathering to corridor-defending, in order.
Step 1
Signal is valuable
People gather around it. The thing being coordinated generates real value — religious conviction, professional standards, market liquidity, open-source reputation.
Step 2
Scale needs management
The group grows past its cognitive limits. Roles are created to carry coordination overhead — priest, officer, committee, admin.
Step 3
Roles attract corridor-seekers
The role is worth more than doing the underlying work. People who want the role — not the signal — begin investing in acquiring it.
Step 4
Corridor-seekers get the corridors
Good actors are doing the work. Bad actors are investing in the corridor. Over time the people willing to invest most in the choke point hold it.
Step 5
Defending the corridor displaces the signal
The institution's energy shifts from the original purpose to protecting access, managing challengers, and justifying the structure. The signal was the reason. The corridor is now the point.
Kierkegaard named this for Christianity: "The moment Christianity becomes something that can be protected, it has already ceased to be Christianity." Every institution that becomes worth protecting runs this sequence. The form stays. The signal leaves. The structure stays to protect a content that is no longer there.
Topos
Make the corridor cost more.
The wrong answer is to eliminate structure. Coordination needs minimum structure. The corridor exists because the signal needs to be carried. Removing all choke points removes coordination itself.
The right question is: what would make seeking the corridor cost more than doing the work?
Elinor Ostrom spent forty years on this question in the context of managed commons — fisheries, forests, irrigation systems. She found that communities that successfully resisted capture of their shared resources did it through design, not character. The design raises the cost of bad behaviour at every stage, before it compounds.
The same design principles apply to coordination corridors. Each move below raises the cost of corridor-seeking relative to the cost of doing the work.

Federate at cognitive limits
Keep groups under the trust threshold (~15 high-trust, ~150 community). Above it, coordination requires management; management creates corridors. Federate before the group needs a manager.
Reputation-first
Encode reputation as currency
When standing is the primary prize and standing is earned by work — not by corridor-proximity — corridor-seeking buys nothing. The corridor is not worth the investment if it confers no valuable reputation.

Graduate the sanctions
Graduated sanctions for rule-breakers, monitored by community members. Low-cost first warning; escalating cost for repeat offenses. Corridor-seeking becomes progressively expensive before it succeeds.
Open standards
Make the protocol auditable
An open, auditable, modifiable standard has no exclusive routing authority. Any node can route around a captured gatekeeper. The corridor's control value is zero when the protocol is open.
Slashing
Slash stake for protocol-hostile moves
Encode the cost in the standard. A protocol that slashes stake for protocol-hostile behaviour makes corridor-seeking expensive by construction. The architecture is the anti-capture argument made executable.
Kairos
The architecture is the argument.
This is why the mycelium substrate routes attention with no central planner. The architecture does not create a choke point worth capturing. Attention flows to greatest need through protocol — not through a gatekeeper. The protocol is auditable. The route is challengeable. The node can be bypassed.
This is not a technical bet. It is an incentive bet. If the architecture makes the corridor too expensive to hold, the corridor-seekers will not come. The cost is structural, not appealed to. The signal can reach the thing it was for without a priest between them.
DAOs removed the human priest and sometimes installed an algorithmic one — when the protocol encodes wrong values at inception, the algorithm enforces capture as efficiently as it would enforce coordination. The architecture is only anti-capture if the design was anti-capture. The code does not fix a bad spec.
The open question is mechanism design: what concrete arrangements make the choke point cost more to capture than it yields? Reputation systems, graduated sanctions, slashing, subsidiarity, and auditable protocols all converge on this question. The playbook is the know-how layer — not the argument for why it matters, but the mechanism for how to build it.
