Capabilities

When AI connects dots better than humans — what's left to connect?

A skill is what you do. A capability is what enables you to do it.

Capability = Resources (Compute/Capital/Tools) + Know-How (Skills) + Character

There is no point having skills if you lack the resources to deploy them. Conversely, possessing compute or capital without the skills to direct them is just dormant potential. Skills get automated; capabilities appreciate because they direct how skills are applied.

The Swarm

Who brings what across the ecoosystem of players that build communities?

Player TypeWhat They BringThe ConstraintThe Edge
ArchetypesModes (Dreamer, Realist, etc.)AttentionDirection / Intention
Biological BeingsCapabilities (Know-how + Character)Time / EnergyJudgment, Trust, Taste
Phygital BeingsSkills & Resources (Compute, Code)Context / ComputeSpeed, Scale, Synthesis

When you combine Archetypes (the operating system) directing Biological Beings (who bring capabilities) coordinating Phygital Beings (who execute skills), you get The Swarm (the Third Mind). The T-shaped professional bridges all three: wide enough to distribute value, deep enough to create it.

Scoring: Data/AI/Robot = how much each force reshapes the capability (1-5). T-Bar: H = distributes value, V = creates value. Three patterns emerge: high AI + low data = amplified but irreplaceable (storytelling, creativity). High data + high AI = contested territory (pattern recognition, memory). Low everything = pure human (empathy, taste, optimism).

T-Shaped

The horizontal bar spreads value. The vertical bar makes value.

BarWhat It DoesCapabilitiesCompound Effect
HorizontalDistribute — context switch, build trust, translate across domains, increase reachStorytelling, Listening, Selling, Empathy, LanguagesThe broader your interests, the more opportunities you can see
VerticalCreate — deep domain judgment that's hard to replace, defensible point of differenceSystems Thinking, First Principles, Planning, Investing, TasteThe deeper your expertise, the more value you can produce

T-shaped is not a job title. It is a capability profile. Work Charts shift from "where do you sit?" to "what can you do?" — in that frame, a T-shape describes how a person stays effective as work becomes more fluid, agent-assisted, and judged by outcomes rather than org-chart position.

In an AI economy, pattern-heavy execution gets automated while humans keep roles involving trust, exceptions, trade-offs, narrative, and real-time judgment. The scorecard above makes this visible: every row where AI scores 4-5 is contested territory. The Human Edge column shows what survives. Being T-shaped is the survival pattern — wide enough range to collaborate across the contested rows, deep enough expertise to remain unmistakably useful in the ones AI cannot claim.

Build on your strengths. Cover your weaknesses. Deepen your values.

Questions

If AI scores 5 on a capability, does that make the human version worthless — or priceless?

  • Which row in the scorecard would you invest 10,000 hours in, and what does your answer reveal about your theory of value?
  • Where does the T-bar column predict the next capability moat — horizontal distribution or vertical depth?
  • What capability combination creates a moat no single capability can?
