Capabilities

When AI connects dots better than humans — what's left to connect?

A skill is what you do. A capability is what enables you to do it.

Capability = Resources (Compute/Capital/Tools) + Know-How (Skills) + Character

There is no point having skills if you lack the resources to deploy them. Conversely, possessing compute or capital without the skills to direct them is just dormant potential. Skills get automated; capabilities appreciate because they direct how skills are applied.

The Swarm

Who brings what across the ecosystem of players that build communities?

Player TypeWhat They BringThe ConstraintThe Edge
ArchetypesModes (Dreamer, Realist, etc.)AttentionDirection / Intention
Biological BeingsCapabilities (Know-how + Character)Time / EnergyJudgment, Trust, Taste
Phygital BeingsSkills & Resources (Compute, Code)Context / ComputeSpeed, Scale, Synthesis

When you combine Archetypes (the operating system) directing Biological Beings (who bring capabilities) coordinating Phygital Beings (who execute skills), you get The Swarm (the Third Mind). The T-shaped professional bridges all three: wide enough to distribute value, deep enough to create it.

The Loop

Capabilities follow a loop. Perceive the field. Think about what you see. Direct intelligence where it matters. Express what moves others. Bond through trust. The loop compounds.

Perceive → Think → Direct → Express → Bond
↑ │
└──────── Compound ←─────────────────┘

Three patterns emerge from the scorecard: high AI + low data = amplified but irreplaceable (storytelling, creativity). High data + high AI = contested territory (pattern recognition, memory). Low everything = pure human (empathy, taste, optimism).

Scoring: Data/AI/Robot = how much each force reshapes the capability (1-5). T-Bar: H = distributes value horizontally, V = creates value vertically.

Perceive

Read the field before others do. Input capabilities — how you receive signal from noise.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Pattern Recognition552VContext AI lacks
Truth Recognition221VIdentity as setpoint
Reading551VSynthesize meaning
Listening221HEmpathy in real-time

Contested territory. AI matches humans on pattern recognition and reading speed — but misses the context that makes recognition into insight. Truth recognition scores lowest on AI (2) because identity as setpoint is not a data problem.

Think

Make sense of what you see. Processing capabilities — how you reason from evidence to judgment.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Systems Thinking431VJudgment across boundaries
First Principles321VChallenge assumptions
Critical Thinking331VEvaluate without bias
Planning441VJudgment under uncertainty
Visualisation231VSee futures

The human stronghold. AI scores 2-4 across every thinking capability because thinking requires crossing boundaries that training data respects. First principles scores AI at 2 — you cannot challenge assumptions you were trained on.

Direct

Point intelligence where it matters. Control capabilities — the interface between intention and execution.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Questioning231H+VUnlock what's hidden
Prompting351VDirect intelligence
Orchestration343H+VWhen to think vs delegate
Focus221VScarcest resource
Working Memory551VWhat matters, not what's stored

The meta-group. Orchestration is the capability that uses all others — knowing when to think and when to delegate thinking. Prompting is the interface layer between human intent and AI execution. Together they define the new work mode: you direct, the swarm executes, you verify.

Express

Create movement in others. Output capabilities — how you transfer belief.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Storytelling241HEmotional truth
Writing251HVoice and conviction
Presenting121HPhysical presence
Languages351HCultural nuance

The amplification zone. AI writes faster but cannot write with conviction — the voice that makes readers trust you wrote it because you lived it. Presenting is the most AI-resistant (1/2/1) because physical presence cannot be synthesized. Every Express capability is horizontal-bar — they distribute value outward.

Bond

Build trust that compounds. Connection capabilities — where consciousness meets consciousness.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Empathy111HConsciousness meets consciousness
Selling331HTrust transfer
Negotiation321HFind mutual value

The human moat. Empathy scores 1/1/1 — lowest possible across all forces. No amount of data, compute, or robotics replaces one consciousness recognizing another. Selling is trust transfer, not persuasion — the difference matters. Negotiation requires finding what costs you nothing to give, which requires understanding what the other side values — an empathy derivative.

Compound

What appreciates over time. Accumulation capabilities — the feedback loops that make everything else worth more.

CapabilityDataAIRobotT-BarHuman Edge
Taste111VGood vs good enough
Creativity241VNovel combinations
Optimism111H+VPersist through setbacks
Investing541VConviction under uncertainty

Where loops close. Taste (1/1/1) and optimism (1/1/1) are pure human — no force reshapes them because they are character expressed as capability. Investing scores high on data (5) because markets are information-dense, but the human edge is conviction under uncertainty — the willingness to act on incomplete information. Creativity is amplified by AI (4) but the novel combination — connecting two things nobody has connected — requires the cross-boundary judgment that starts the loop again.

T-Shaped

The horizontal bar spreads value. The vertical bar makes value.

BarWhat It DoesCapabilitiesCompound Effect
HorizontalDistribute — context switch, build trust, translate across domains, increase reachStorytelling, Listening, Selling, Empathy, LanguagesThe broader your interests, the more opportunities you can see
VerticalCreate — deep domain judgment that's hard to replace, defensible point of differenceSystems Thinking, First Principles, Planning, Investing, TasteThe deeper your expertise, the more value you can produce

T-shaped is not a job title. It is a capability profile. Work Charts shift from "where do you sit?" to "what can you do?" — in that frame, a T-shape describes how a person stays effective as work becomes more fluid, agent-assisted, and judged by outcomes rather than org-chart position.

In an AI economy, pattern-heavy execution gets automated while humans keep roles involving trust, exceptions, trade-offs, narrative, and real-time judgment. Every row where AI scores 4-5 is contested territory. The Human Edge column shows what survives. Being T-shaped is the survival pattern — wide enough range to collaborate across the contested rows, deep enough expertise to remain unmistakably useful in the ones AI cannot claim.

Build on your strengths. Cover your weaknesses. Deepen your values.
