There Will Never Be Artificial Wisdom
What happens when the spec is perfect but nobody gives a damn?
The AI world just split "prompting" into four disciplines. Prompt craft. Context engineering. Intent engineering. Specification engineering. Your best project managers have been doing all four since before the internet existed.
The question nobody is asking: what did those project managers have that the four disciplines don't capture?
The Rediscovery
Nate B Jones laid it out. Four skills. Cumulative. The gap is between people who understand all four and people stuck on the first.

The Factory Floor
I learned all four on a dairy factory commissioning floor.
When commissioning goes wrong — and it always does — it's never because someone couldn't follow an instruction. That's prompt craft. Table stakes. It goes wrong because the context was incomplete, the intent was ambiguous, or the spec missed the edge case.
The agent that drifts because its spec was incomplete? That's the contractor who built to plan without understanding the plant's purpose. The fix is the same: get the context right, encode the intent, write specs that anticipate what you won't be there to explain.
The Fifth Skill
Someone on the commissioning team notices a valve isn't seated properly at 2am. It's not their remit. Not in their scope. Not in any specification. They fix it anyway, because they care about the plant working.
That's goodwill. You can't spec it.
Nate's four disciplines are all encoding. Getting the tokens right. Making the spec complete. Engineering without spirit.

No AI framework accounts for the gap between what the spec says and what the situation demands. The gap is a feature. Over-specify and you kill the space where people bring what no spec anticipated.
Belief Infrastructure
Napoleon Hill figured out the mechanism a century ago.
Think and Grow Rich isn't about manifesting money. Hill's insight is that belief is coordination infrastructure. You can't gather a mastermind alliance around a vague intent. You can't convert goodwill into capital if nobody believes the dream is real. The dream has to be sharp enough that other people can see themselves inside it.
And to be rich — in Hill's original sense — is to live the experience of doing good things in the company of good people. The financial capital is exhaust.
That's intent engineering before anyone called it that. Intention is coordination infrastructure, not vibes. Not encoding purpose for machines. Engineering belief until it becomes the frame that people coordinate around without being told.
Hill's gap was platform. The mastermind was ad hoc. Person-to-person. Couldn't scale. What he described but couldn't build was the shared substrate — the mycelium — where crystallised intent becomes something other people plug into.
Even Hill started one step too late. He started with belief. The precondition for belief is the picture. Nate starts at specification. Hill starts at belief. The real gap is upstream of both — a picture clear enough that other people can build from it long after you're gone.
The Displacement
The displacement wave isn't coming. It's here. Every one of Nate's four skills represents a capability AI improves at faster than most people learn it.
The question isn't whether AI takes jobs. The question is who catches the displaced.
Not with retraining programmes. With a picture clear enough that someone in freefall can see where they fit. With belief systems where the intent is legible and the work is meaningful.
That's what mental models are for. Not frameworks for frameworks. Landing pads for people in freefall.
The Stake
There will never be artificial wisdom.
Intelligence — yes. AI already outperforms humans on most thinking tests. Judgment — probably. But judgment is what you exercise when the rules run out, and that requires something else entirely.
Wisdom requires three things no current architecture can produce.
Situated embodiment. You have to be in the situation. The midnight valve repair happens because you feel the cold, you smell the ammonia, you know the night shift arrives in four hours and they'll inherit whatever you leave behind. Wisdom is knowing what THIS person needs to hear to make the dream their own. Machines attend to everyone equally. Wisdom attends to this one.
Relational history. Wisdom comes from having been wrong and it costing you something and having to face the same people tomorrow. The contractor who learns to over-communicate after a costly misunderstanding didn't read it in a training set. They lived it.
Skin in the game. Wisdom emerges when the consequences of being wrong fall on you. When you can't reset the context window and start fresh. When your reputation, your relationships, and your livelihood are tangled up in the outcome.
AI starts every conversation clean. The opposite of integrity. Integrity means carrying the weight of yesterday's mistake into today's decision.
That's not a limitation of the technology. It's the definition of the asset.
Wisdom is a costly signal. It works because it cannot be faked — the same way a handwritten letter means more than an email, not despite the effort but because of it. Every cognitive task AI absorbs makes the tasks it cannot absorb more valuable. The scarcer genuine skin in the game becomes, the higher its price. The people betting against human wisdom are making the same mistake as those who thought diamonds would be worthless once we could manufacture them. The manufactured version isn't the same product.
A critic will say I'm defining wisdom to exclude machines, then celebrating the exclusion. Fair challenge. But the costly signal isn't a definition trick — it's an economic structure. Wisdom that costs nothing to produce would stop being trusted, the same way a signature loses meaning when anyone can forge it. The cost IS the mechanism.
The phygital being isn't AI becoming human. It's humans using tools that are honest about what they lack — so the wisdom stays where it belongs. With the people who have something to lose.
The Binding
In a rugby scrum, five players bind. Boots dig into wet grass. Shoulders lock against bone. The scrum doesn't hold because the technique is perfect. It holds because five people trust each other with their necks. That trust isn't specified. It's earned. Rep by rep. Season by season. Through shared suffering and shared purpose.
The Tight Five questions do the same work:
- Why does this matter? — Intent engineering, but with soul
- What truths guide you? — Context engineering, but with principles
- What do you control? — Specification engineering, but with sovereignty
- What do you see others don't? — Pattern recognition, but with lived perspective
- How do you know it's working? — The feedback loop, but with stakes
The fifth thing — the binding — is what makes the other four matter.
Good Intentions
Are your intentions good?
How do you know?
What will provably demonstrate that?
How long can you maintain that integrity?
The Sagrada Familia started with digging a massive hole. The first workers were dead before any tower rose. Gaudí himself died in 1926. They're still building from his pictures. That's the test of engineered intention — a picture clear enough to outlive its creator.
These aren't rhetorical questions. They're engineering requirements.
Software's primary job is to enable coordination of meaningful endeavor. Not efficient endeavor. Not profitable endeavor. Meaningful.
The displacement wave will sort people into two groups. Those who specified everything except what mattered. And those who pictured something worth sacrificing for — then built it.
The spec will be perfect. The context will be complete. The intent will be encoded. The prompts will be clear.
And wisdom will still belong to the person who fixed the valve at midnight.
