The Mechanism

Respect is not deference. Respect is taking someone seriously enough to be honest with them, to engage with their perspective before dismissing it, and to behave consistently whether or not they're watching.

In practice:

  • Respect for time: showing up prepared, not making people repeat themselves
  • Respect for perspective: engaging the best version of an argument before responding to the worst version
  • Respect in disagreement: naming what you disagree with specifically, not characterizing the person
  • Respect at scale: behaving consistently toward people who have nothing to offer you

The compound effect: Respect is a signaling mechanism that attracts other high-respect people. The absence of it repels them. Over a long career, the quality of your network is determined largely by how you treated people when it wasn't transactionally obvious you should.

In organizations: Cultures where disrespect is tolerated from high-performers develop a hidden cost — the people most capable of leaving do. The ones who stay are either too comfortable to go or too beaten down to notice.

Respect and AI agents: As AI agents interact with humans in professional contexts, the question of whether agents can demonstrate respect — or should — becomes real. An agent that optimizes task completion without social grace will be technically useful and culturally corrosive.

Questions

Does respect require effort — or is it a byproduct of genuinely caring about the outcome for the other person?

  • At what scale does a culture of respect require explicit norms and enforcement rather than emerging naturally from individual virtue?
  • When respect conflicts with honesty — telling someone what they want to hear vs what they need to hear — which virtue yields?
  • How do you design interactions with AI agents so that they model respect for the humans they work with, rather than optimizing past it?
