The Inner Loop
Which story is running in you right now — and did you choose it?
The outer game runs on the inner loop. Every decision, protocol, and conversation is downstream of the story playing inside you at that moment.
Inner space is not an escape from outer space. It is where better intentions form before they are expressed in the world.
The Modes Within
The five thinking modes — Philosopher, Dreamer, Engineer, Realist, Coach — are not different people. They are states within the same person. Time × Energy determines which one is accessible.
| Mode | Inner State | Accessible When |
|---|---|---|
| Philosopher | Unsettled, questioning | Direction feels wrong — peak clarity needed |
| Dreamer | Open, expansive | Energy is high, constraints feel optional |
| Engineer | Focused, sequential | Task is clear, distractions are low |
| Realist | Grounded, honest | Stories need checking against evidence |
| Coach | Present, unhurried | Another person needs unlocking — not you |
You cannot choose your mode by willpower alone. The inner loop determines which mode is running. Master the loop, and you choose which mode shows up.
The Loop
Your personality shapes your personal reality. The story you tell yourself — about who you are, what's possible, what you deserve — runs as a feedback loop. It reinforces itself until interrupted.
Regulatory loops hold you stable. Goal-oriented, corrective, they keep you on track.
Amplifying loops change you. They signal that adaptation is needed. Growth lives here — and so does runaway thinking.
The practice is learning to distinguish which loop is running and whether you put it there.
Inner to Outer Bridge
| Layer | Core Question | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Inner | What is true in me right now? | Mindfulness, reflection, emotional labeling |
| Third | How do I communicate this clearly with others? | Meetings protocol and shared language |
| Outer | What evidence shows this works in reality? | Performance and decision traces |
Without this bridge, inner insight stays private and cannot compound into culture.
Practice
Four moves that shift the loop:
- Notice — Name the story running. "I'm in Realist mode. I'm depleted. I'm running a scarcity loop." Naming breaks automaticity.
- Interrupt — Change the input before changing the story. Sleep, movement, a single question from the Philosopher. The mode shifts with the physiology.
- Redirect — Once the loop pauses, choose the mode the moment needs. The routing algorithm uses time and state of mind as its two coordinates.
- Compound — Repeated interruption and redirection builds neuroplasticity. New loops become easier to run. Old loops lose their grip.
The goal is not to eliminate the regulatory loops. It is to ensure the amplifying loops point somewhere worth going.
Context
- Time and Energy — Time × Energy = Attention. The formula that determines which mode is accessible.
- Archetypes — The five modes. States within you, not separate people.
- Flow State — What happens when the inner loop and outer task align.
- Routing Algorithm — Time and state of mind as the two coordinates of routing.
- The Three Spaces — Inner, outer, and the third space where they meet.
- Navigation System — Value, Belief, Control: the three systems the inner loop navigates.
Questions
Which mode is running in you right now — and did you choose it, or did circumstances choose it for you?
- If the mode you're in is not the mode the moment needs, what would it take to shift it?
- Which amplifying loops are you running that you did not consciously install?
- What is the smallest interruption that has ever reliably changed your state?
