Think Weeks
A "think week" is dedicated to deep thinking, reading, writing and strategizing.
Planning:
- Choose an isolated location with minimal distractions, like a cabin in the woods or a quiet room. Avoid bringing devices that will tempt you to break focus.
- Set clear objectives for what you want to accomplish, such as developing a strategy, working through a complex problem, or gaining new knowledge through deep reading and reflection. Have a plan for how you will spend the time.
- Bring relevant reading material like reports, research papers, books, a notebook and pen - but leave behind your regular computer and phone to minimize interruptions. Bill Gates would read papers for up to 18 hours per day during his think weeks.
- Schedule it in advance and protect the time. Treat it as a top priority and hold yourself accountable to following through[2]. Start with a short 1-2 hour thinking session if a full week isn't feasible.
Desired Outcomes:
- Solutions to difficult challenges or decisions
- New ideas and creative breakthroughs
- Deeper knowledge and insights from focused learning
- Greater clarity on goals and priorities
- A strategic plan or roadmap for moving forward
