Metrics

metrics you should pay attention to:

  • Transaction Throughput: This refers to the rate at which valid transactions are committed by the blockchain system in a defined time period. It's expressed as transactions per second (TPS) at a network size 1.
  • Transaction Latency: This is a network-wide view of the amount of time taken for a transaction’s effect to be usable across the network. It includes the time from the point that it is submitted to the point that the result is widely available in the network 1.
  • Read Latency and Throughput: Read latency is the time between when the read request is submitted and when the reply is received. Read throughput is a measure of how many read operations are completed in a defined time period 1.
  • Network Size: This is the number of validating nodes participating in consensus in the system under test. Network size expresses the total number of nodes actively participating in the blockchain network that support the unique features of a blockchain 1.
  • Consensus: In the context of blockchain, consensus is the distributed process by which a network of nodes provides a guaranteed unique order of transactions and validates the block of transactions 1.

Decision framework to apply:

  • Evaluate the transaction throughput and latency to understand the performance of the blockchain network. A higher throughput and lower latency generally indicate a more efficient network.
  • Analyze read latency and throughput to understand the speed at which data can be retrieved from the blockchain. This can impact the responsiveness of applications built on the blockchain.
  • Consider the network size in the context of the blockchain's scalability. A larger network size may indicate a more decentralized and potentially more secure network, but it can also impact transaction latency and throughput.
  • Evaluate the consensus mechanism used in the blockchain as it impacts the transaction latency, throughput, and overall performance of the blockchain network.
